I was EXTREMELY fortunate enough to be at this very concert. Little did I know, when they said they were recording the concert that I would be watching/listening 39 years later on a phone, and that the rest of the world could also do the same!
You were at this Houston concert???!!! Details, man! I need deets!!! Did it really sound this good? Did it sound even better than what could be captured on film and digitally?
There's a reason you didn't ever see any live (or studio for that matter) vocal performances like the one in Houston by Mr. Perry. They were simply unattainable. His vocal level at the end of this song is indescribable. His passion undeniable. The entire band at their height. I was gifted an opportunity to see them live twice in the early 80's. Once indoors and once outdoors. Zero difference in the sound quality of the performances. I still drive right past that rural outdoor venue every day on my way to work. There have been countless occasions when I swear I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills taking me back to a time and place that I am eternally grateful to have experienced. So thankful to have grown up listening to the music of the 70's and early 80's. Too many great bands to list but Journey will always be my pick for the best in terms of overall musicianship across the board led by a generational singer named Steve Perry. Thank you for the memories men! All respect......
Yes, this is so true. Classic Journey...so hard to find a word to give them the praise they deserve. And as for Steve Perry, our music master, I absolutely adore both the man and his music. This song, his vocals and passion at the end, never fail to make me cry. One of a kind, an enigma, a gem!!
honestly gave me chills when I read this part ..."I still drive past that venue ... I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills..." ....
At 57 years young I also was very fortunate to see Journey at JFK outdoor stadium in the early 80s. It was George Thourogood, Journey and the Rolling Stones. I was 16 and I have lived in Southern Delaware since 1976. I went with co workers and I honestly didn't care about the Rolling Stones. I went to see George T. and Journey !!!!!!!!! Steve's voice, the melodic rhythm, the power, the range, just everything about him was mind blowing !!!! Yes, his voice has changed as he aged but I adore him now, if not more, because he sings from the heart. His lyrics are fabulous. His new band is fantastic. And I personally think that his voice now is sexy , soft and beautiful. Mother, Father is absolutely one of my all time favorites !!! No more cryin' is now one of my favorites . Both songs give me chills every time I listen to them. And that's alot ! He is still " The Voice ". 💙
And the way he expresses thru his hands !!!! He is so beautiful thru his soul and his voice. I personally don't think that, at least in my lifetime at 57 years young that I will ever experience such as " The Voice " ever again. He's truly the best. !!!!
Agree, 150%! In my opinion, it’s the best pop rock vocal performance live I’ve ever seen! When he’s singing falsettos at the end, it sounds like the keyboard part in the song. The first time I watched this, I thought that’s what it was. Simply incredible! There’s a reason why they call Steve Perry The Voice. This performance proves that. The whole band is just off the chain here. Just such great musicians!
@merlomusic7856 Except he's not singing falsetto. He's got like a 3 or 4 octave range and at his upper range could be considered a high tenor/soprano. I'm a 1st soprano, and in my younger days, I could match him note for note. His breath control is insane!! I wish I had his control! And I know his Dad was a vocalist, so I'm pretty sure he paid attention and leaned some things from him as well. 🎶
Steve P is one of the only singers who sounds in concert/in person exactly like he does on the album. The world lost an enormous gift when he stopped performing.

No more crying is such a beautiful song . Still loving journey with Steve Perry leading and I'm 63 now.. not impressed with the new singer. That's not my journey. Js
I was blessed to attend Journey concerts in the ‘80’s.. My first concert was in 1980. I totally fell in love with this band. It was a tight band and Steve Perry’s vocals were perfection.
I went to 2 Journey concerts in the 80s and both were incredible first with my Dad then with my fiance. Wonderful times great memories. Both men have passed away now. Within 3 months of each other in 2013.
Listen to 3 Dog Night. 3 great voices with perfect harmonies. You’ll change your opinion. Journey has better songs but 3DN had 3 great singers that could easily keep up with SP. Sadly, Cory Wells, one of the greatest singers ever, died in 2015 but the other two still live and still sing beautifully.

Amazing that Steve's vocal performance is still being discussed, analyzed and listened to over 40 years later. Escape was an amazing album with amazing musicians, song writing and, of course, the pure soaring vocals of Steve Perry ( live or recorded) ! No one comes close!
There is lot of great voice in 80s and early 90s you can check cj snare of fire house doing live overnight sensation, jeff martin of racer X a metal band superheroes live, DIO and iron maiden Dickinson ,
This guy was better live than on tape!! Only singer I've ever heard that could do that. Freddie was great in the studio, but changed his octaves live. Plant could do it for basically 1-2 years, but after '71, he was also changing his octaves. Ozzy, Dio, and the rest couldn't hold a candle to Perry live. Tbh, Brad Delp form Boston came close, as did Rod Stewart. Even Greg lake and Jon Anderson missed on certain nights.. But not for an entire career like Steve. Imo only, but I saw them all.
In awe and blown away as always with Steve Perry's vocals. He stated in an interview this was one of the hardest songs he has had to sing, yet he does it flawlessly. Especially at the end..the high notes. His voice is liquid Gold..

@@DreidMusicalX This song was definitely never as popular as Journey's other ballads such as Open Arms and Faithfully but this song has definitely always been appreciated by Journey's fans!
Holy shit, Perry could sing his ASS OFF back then. I have always loved his voice and the passion he sings with. The note he hits at the end of this song............
Rolling Stone Magazine is, always has been, and probably always will be, ridiculously and narrowly biased as to what stands as valid and hip. Nonetheless, they still stubbornly cling to their long-rendered, obsolete viewpoint. From my perspective, for what it's worth, the decline started as early as 1979.
I agree, he has one of the most unique and phenomenal voices in rock ‘n’ roll. He deserves to be in the top five, no questions asked. But he is definitely more than deserving of first place
In my opinion, this is his ultimate vocal performance. So much power, precision and heart brought to this song. There will never be another Steve Perry and the band so expertly supports him musically AND vocally.
I can`t find the interview, but I red that this was the hardest song he ever sang live. Again, I can`t find where I red it, but I belive. An amazing performance.
im a woman that has to sing with him at home in a lower octave, matching his voice cuz i am alto/contralto and cant reach his high notes, of course. I could barely sing Wheel in the Sky without losing my voice in karaoke years ago. but it was requested by a friend
This is the best song ever performed by Steve. His vocals were at a supreme high and unmatched by anyone even to this day.. Steve said in an article this song was difficult to perform, because of it's complexity and hitting the correct vocal range. He said by the time he finished the song he was totally whipped out. Exhausted.
People wonder why Steve Perry doesnt perform anymore ...he set the bar so fkn high with these performances its impossible even for him to follow up his own stuff....wow!!!
Ga Ro he got burnt out and lost his passion for music. He toured for 10 months every year for 12 years and made albums in between. But he’s back now with a new album and sounds amazing.
No one is the same after 30 or 40 years. When we are young we tend to do things like you only live once let's just enjoy what they have shared to us there songs and compositions love this band and there talents.
If I’m being really critical, Steve’s voice wasn’t the same after Escape, you can hear it starting to tear and wane on Frontiers. Which, for me, was the last of great Journey.
Best live vocal performance ive EVER heard. But not only that, this concert....jesus. Ive never seen a band more on point for an entire concert than 81 Houston Journey
Joe, very well stated and I agree 100%. I've posted comments about how much I love love love Steve Perry and his unbelievably talented and rare voice, but I have to say that Jonathan Cain was absolutely amazing on the keyboards at the end. Wow! What a performance by all.
The band are absolutely incredible. If the singer was not such an unbelievable phenomenon then people would be raving about the whole bands performances too. First class rock/soul musicians.
One of my favorite songs! Just all around amazing. Steve’s sky scraping vocals; Neal's phenomenal fingers; Cain’s keyboard;Steve “Machine Gun" Smith and Ross Vallory on bass. Greatest concert ever!
Check out the Singer Dimash. Different genre, but unbelievable. Also, a Finnish symphonic metal band called Nightwish had their long time bassist named Marko Hietala who had an unbelievable rock voice. His most impressive song was when the covered the Phantom of the Opera.
The difference in SP’s performance of a song is the honesty and passion he gives each song…in such a commanding, clean and precise way… He also has the amazing ability to easily improvise and sings with perfect pitch 👏🏼💯🌹❤️💖
Wow, who are the complete idiots, that ranked Steve Perry # 76 out of 100 in Rolling Stone magazine best Rock vocalist ?? As much as I like Freddie Mercury from Queen, he couldn't sing this song like Steve Perry. I saw Journey 3 times live in the 80's Steve never dodged the hard notes , he sang like no other since or after !!!! Truly the VOICE!!!
There is just no example of this kind of passion in live music today. These guys totally rivet the audience's attention without video screens or effects. Just musical excellent and total performance expression.
Steve Perry, my my my. I love Mother Father, his emotions in this song, his voice, his vocal range, his facial expression at the end as he killed this song! Jonathan Cain's piano solo, was amazing, my favorite version of this song.
Nov 24: I have no words adequate. What an astounding passionate song, deeply meaningful, sung from the soul. Lyrics, voice range, instrumentals. Heaven yomthe ears and soul. 🌹🙏
I saw the new kid Arnel last year at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs. I loved Arnel. SP is the Pavarotti of rock. I'm so glad I grew up in the 70s! Thanks for posting this one. SP parents divorced and I think he's singing this to his parents.
This performance is absolutely amazing!! Dont worry guys this live performance is immortalized on the greatest hits 2 album. So it wont be forgotten. Steve Perry has the best voice of all time in my opinion! EVER.

Yeah, 40 years later and still amazing. Masterpiece. Piano, vocals, guitar, drums, bass...all incredible
Steve really masters the vocals on this song. You can tell it means a lot to him.
Steve set the bar. Unmatched.
Holy shit, Perry could sing his ASS OFF back then. I have always loved his voice and the passion he sings with. The note he hits at the end of this song............
Those notes at the end in falsetto are actually much easier than what he sings in the rest of the song. The versus are INSANE.
You are correct, Kala. Steve Perry had no ass after this concert...
Fun Fact: Steve’s vocals for the studio recording for Mother Father were done in one take. No punch ins.
Rolling Stone put him at #76 out of 100 on their best vocalist list. RS is crazy. He’s easily the best
RS is full of S**t anyway...
He's in the top 10 for sure - Jon Anderson from YES is amazing and powerful as well.
He should be #1
I agree, he has one of the most unique and phenomenal voices in rock ‘n’ roll. He deserves to be in the top five, no questions asked. But he is definitely more than deserving of first place
In my opinion, this is his ultimate vocal performance. So much power, precision and heart brought to this song. There will never be another Steve Perry and the band so expertly supports him musically AND vocally.
Sie sind einfach perfekt in dieser Aufstellung. Der helle Wahnsinn. 😘
YES ✅
That's why Steven Ray Perry is called:
✨THE VOICE✨
💖
I can`t find the interview, but I red that this was the hardest song he ever sang live. Again, I can`t find where I red it, but I belive. An amazing performance.
@@viniciusfrayzedavid9424 Deen Castronovo sings this AND drums...it's amazing. He's not Steve Perry but he's a billion times better than Arnel
@@1974jester da geb ich dir gern recht. Steve bleibt für mich immer unerreichbar. 👌
I'm only 12 yrs old on that time but now I'm 52 yrs old Journey's songs always Remain.
**CHILLS** still today!!
Such a hard song to sing, but Steve nails it always!!
im a woman that has to sing with him at home in a lower octave, matching his voice cuz i am alto/contralto and cant reach his high notes, of course.
Exhausted.
People wonder why Steve Perry doesnt perform anymore ...he set the bar so fkn high with these performances its impossible even for him to follow up his own stuff....wow!!!
he is back !!! :D
Ga Ro he got burnt out and lost his passion for music. He toured for 10 months every year for 12 years and made albums in between. But he’s back now with a new album and sounds amazing.
Truthful story 💯
No one is the same after 30 or 40 years. When we are young we tend to do things like you only live once let's just enjoy what they have shared to us there songs and compositions love this band and there talents.
If I’m being really critical, Steve’s voice wasn’t the same after Escape, you can hear it starting to tear and wane on Frontiers. Which, for me, was the last of great Journey.
Best live vocal performance ive EVER heard.
But not only that, this concert....jesus. Ive never seen a band more on point for an entire concert than 81 Houston Journey
Thank goodness they recorded it. Perry also produced the DVD and CD for this concert.
Pardon my French. NO S________! I was there as well!
I'll never forgetvwatching the live Concert in Houston which was played on P..B.S........
One of my favorite songs! Just all around amazing. Steve’s sky scraping vocals; Neal's phenomenal fingers; Cain’s keyboard;Steve “Machine Gun" Smith and Ross Vallory on bass. Greatest concert ever!
@4:54 stop...rewind...did he really just do that live!!? Amazing voice...simply breath taking.
I keep rewinding because I just can’t get enough👍
Check out the Singer Dimash. Different genre, but unbelievable. Also, a Finnish symphonic metal band called Nightwish had their long time bassist named Marko Hietala who had an unbelievable rock voice. His most impressive song was when the covered the Phantom of the Opera.
Yes Steve's voice will never compare to that of any other. He is the VOICE!!
Must have this as ring tone!!
NO ONE CAN BEAT THAT VOCAL! Journey IS.... Steve Perry!!! He had his own class and his own style, which cannot be replicated.
How can you do anything but marvel at a voice like that!? What a gift he was given, and thankfully shared with all of us!!
I get extreme chills when I listen to this Steve Perry Neal Schon everyone are so incredible
Bring the kids. Teach them about this. That's THE voice!
what an impressive voice
the most impressive interpretation of rock music of all time
I was there Nov of 81 it was a night of nights Journey was in thier glory blazing and heartfelt now crystallized in my heart forevermore
589,000 views? This powerhouse of a song should have 589 million.
The vids get renewed every once in a while.
Exactly. I cry every time.
I love how the band leaves absolutely nothing left on the stage, they put their all into this performance and all the others! Love these guys!
The difference in SP’s performance of a song is the honesty and passion he gives each song…in such a commanding, clean and precise way… He also has the amazing ability to easily improvise and sings with perfect pitch 👏🏼💯🌹❤️💖
He throws several notes into the air and juggles them effortlessly, stopping and landing on any note at will, with ease and perfection.
I don't have words. It's beyond that...
I was there!!!❤
Was goodd? ❤
Mary _ lucky you
SO wish I was there with you! What do you remember?
Mother father is a perfect example of Steve's incredible talent.
Those notes he hits at the ending continue to haunt me after over a decade and a few hundred listens out of the same CD. Absolute magic.
To think the studio recording was done in ONE take with Steve's vocals.
He's that's good!
This song is a gem! ❤️🎙️🎼🎹🎸🥁
There's so much meaning to this song, and Steve sure does make you feel the emotions....
"The Voice"....I think was his nick name...
just phenomenal!...🙂
Nov 24: I have no words adequate. What an astounding passionate song, deeply meaningful, sung from the soul. Lyrics, voice range, instrumentals. Heaven yomthe ears and soul. 🌹🙏
THIS is vocal ability at it's FINEST... I love this❤
I saw the new kid Arnel last year at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs. I loved Arnel. SP is the Pavarotti of rock. I'm so glad I grew up in the 70s! Thanks for posting this one. SP parents divorced and I think he's singing this to his parents.
Insanely underrated
By whom?
This performance is absolutely amazing!! Dont worry guys this live performance is immortalized on the greatest hits 2 album. So it wont be forgotten. Steve Perry has the best voice of all time in my opinion! EVER.
Amazing to think that if you listen to the studio version, he had more range than this. Absolutely incredible.
Primero perdi a mi madre, luego perdi a mi padre y ayer 3 de enero 2025 perdi a mi hermana!!!!! Me parte el alma este tema pero lo amo demaciado!!!! Journey por siempre!!!!!!
I think this is so iconic because they all leave it out on the table and wring everything from within for this performance. Truly otherworldly!
Steve Perry simply put owns the mic with unprecedently skill not seen before or after his prime.
A Journey masterpiece!
There are simply no words for Journey man. The only thing I can say is, I'm happy this was recorded for future generations like me.
